About Janus ProductionsJanus (Jay-nus) Productions is a youth-oriented and youth-operated independent theatre company, based in St. John's and Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Janus began as a dream of founding President and Director, Chris Fry, in the summer of 2005. A recurring face in community theatre in both cities, Chris recognized an enormous lack of performing opportunities for aspiring young stage artists when he directed O'Donel High School's 2005 Drama Festival entry Women and Wallace. The quality of young talent in Newfoundland and Labrador is simply too bright to be out of the spotlight, and so Janus was born to help make young lights shine to their fullest. The production company was officially founded on March 9th, 2006, by Chris Fry and Samantha Blanchette.
The company is named after the Roman god Janus, the two-faced god of gates, doors, beginnings and endings. He was frequently used to symbolize change and transitions in such things as the progression of past to future, visions, from one universe to another, and the growing up of youth (Full Wikipedia.org entry for Janus can be found here). As a for-youth by-youth organization, Janus aims to not only produce mature, professional quality productions for local audiences, but to also act as a means of gaining experience and becoming familiar with all aspects of a theatrical production for the province's young and upcoming performers. Participants in any regard will hone their skills in a peer-based, constructive environment, while making new friends and having a great time all at once.
